One of my favourite Japanese TV genres has got to be the tough love teaching genre. You know, like Dangerous Minds but with teachers who have a background other than teaching that always comes to the surface at the worst possible time. Gokusen had a female teacher who was the grand daughter of a Yakuza boss, Misaki Number 1 featured a hostess turned teacher, and Onizuka-sensei of GTO fame (my all-time favourite show in this genre) was a yankee/bad-ass biker who wanted to be a teacher so he could get with high school girls. Kodaka, Yozora and Sena playing video games

Some people just don’t make friends very easily, especially when you are a blond Half transfer student who looks like a Yankee. So when said transfer student, one Kodaka Hasegawa, walks into a classroom and witnesses another social outcast, Yozora  Mikazuki, talking to her imaginary friend, he quickly finds himself a founding member of the Neighbour’s Club. By forming this club, Yozora and Kodaka hope to change their social situations by making new friends and working on their social skills. (more…)

Yō and Hana reach for victory

All Yō Satō wants is to eat food that isn’t ramen every night after school. With what meager funds he has as a boarding student, he heads to a nearby convenience store hoping to pick up a discounted bento box. Ouran High School Host Club

In the South Hall of Ouran Private School, life for honour student Haruhi is about to become much more interesting. She was just looking for a quiet place to study; instead she stumbled into the school’s own private male Host Club. Startled by this revelation, she knocks over and breaks an expensive vase, which she cannot afford to replace. To make reparations, Haruhi must work off her debt as Host. So she does so, letting everyone believe she is a male student, with only the members of the club knowing the truth. (more…)

Japanese Food Drops: Choco Banana Crepe & Cheese Cake

These hard, round candies were introduced in Japan prior to World War II, but thanks to the Studio Ghibli masterpiece Grave of the Fireflies, Food Drops (Sakuma Drops) have become extremely popular, with classic and local Japanese flavours just waiting for newcomers to discover. My first experience with food drops has proven to me why these candies have been around for so long, as well as the reason Japanophiles are importing these unique treats. (more…)

Pepsi Dry (Import)

Pepsi: my favourite addiction. So delicious my taste buds tingle just at the thought of drinking the stuff. Regular, Wild Cherry, Crystal or Throwback, I love my Pepsi.

While making my bi-weekly rounds on J-List, I saw a listing for Pepsi Dry. A “non-sweet” cola drink promising a refreshing taste.  I didn’t want to miss out on this new flavour as I had the Mont Blanc Pepsi they’d released about a year ago in Japan, so I made sure that I had a bottle of it on my shopping list. Nobuko finally landed her dream job working at a top fashion magazine. Working for an Editor in Chief who wants her staff to keep their petite figures, she puts in long hours doing menial tasks with the hope that one day she will get her first big article. Her opportunity comes when given the chance to write an article about Patisserie Ange, a popular bakery with a very attractive young man keeping up the family business. (more…)

I have recently fallen in love with this song by the pillows called Doggie Howl from their Horn Again album. It ranks up there for me with Mr. Droopy, Ladybird Girl and Scarecrow as one of my favourite pillows tracks.
