I have been gaming since the early ’80s when my mother first brought home an Atari 2600, Galaga, Q-bert and Dark Chambers. I would sneak in as much gaming time as I could in-between reading the 50+ books I borrowed weekly from the public library and playing street hockey. Twenty plus years later, I’m still playing video games more than 30 hours a week across multiple platforms and loving (almost) every minute of them. Gaming introduced me to my husband, uprooting me from my hometown of Calgary, Alberta, and transporting me to the other side of the continent. Our combined collection of games and other paraphernalia threatens to overrun our two bedroom apartment, but somehow we manage to keep this place partially tidy.
For most of my working life I’ve held some sort of customer service style employment. The highlights for me were managing the EB Games (GameStop) South Trail location in Calgary for nearly two years and owning/operating a little anime shop for another two. I’ve also had the honour of working with and meeting some amazing authors during a healthy stint at Indigo Books & Music prior to those where I coordinated signing events for the likes of Diana Gabaldon, The Best of Bridge, and other local celebrities.
My stint in games journalism has been a relatively short one. I took up the digital pen in the fall of 2008 when I accepted a volunteer position as PR and Marketing Representative for GamingAngels. In addition to my regular duties of reaching out to gaming companies, publishing partners, interacting with the community and building awareness of the site, I also wrote my first published reviews. My review of Dead or Alive Paradise was actually quoted in the marketing materials put together by Tecmo Koei for the game. I’d say that was definitely a highlight for a writer so new to the field.
I also wrote for The Daily Crate (Loot Crate’s blog) from September 2015 until January 2017. I wrote about properties in our Loot Crate, Loot Anime, and Loot Gaming subscription boxes, as well as other pieces pertaining to otaku culture, geeky crafting, and video game reviews. One of my reviews for LEGO Dimensions was quoted in marketing materials and a TV commercial for the series!
Right now I am working on my first Fantasy genre trilogy and editing/co-writing the Vincent Macleod series with Derek Smith. When I’m not working on either, I’m usually playing video games or writing about them as well as my growing figure collection.
