Hammer Session

One of my favourite Japanese TV genres has got to be the tough love teaching genre. You know, like Dangerous Minds but with teachers who have a background other than teaching that always comes to the surface at the worst possible time. Gokusen had a female teacher who was the grand daughter of a Yakuza boss, Misaki Number 1 featured a hostess turned teacher, and Onizuka-sensei of GTO fame (my all-time favourite show in this genre) was a yankee/bad-ass biker who wanted to be a teacher so he could get with high school girls. Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (Live Action)

Sailor Moon holds a special place in the hearts of millions of girls all over the world, mine included. Naoko Takeuchi created the ultimate magical girls manga, which became an anime spanning 200 episodes and a few movies. It is the ultimate guilty pleasure for girls and guys alike. Alongside Dragon Ball Z, the Sailor Scouts helped popularize Japanese animation throughout the globe.

Turning it into a live action program was the obvious next step. (more…)

Juui Dolittle

The veterinarians of Japan see themselves as years behind in the animal medicine practice compared to their American and European counterparts. Most doctors find themselves unable to specialize in one particular area of their art but there are some among them who want to change that. Tottori-sensei might be the rudest vet in Tokyo, seemingly only in it for the money, but his skills in the operating room are unrivaled. His classmate, Hanabishi Masaru has a small chain of animal clinics and hosts Pet 1-1-9, a TV program aimed at educating pet owners. (more…)

Shinzanmono

In the quiet district of Kodenma, secrets and lies begin to surface as the police investigate the murder of a woman who’d recently moved to the area. Mineko Mitsui is found strangled to death in her apartment with very few clues to aid the police; one is a button found on the floor, another a box of sweets from a bakery. (more…)

Hana Yori Dango

Makino Tsukushi’s parents work hard so that they can send her to Eitoku Gakuen, a school she was inspired to attend after hearing one of it’s graduates speak when she was in middle school. They are not a rich family, Makino has no flashy designer accessories and doesn’t have a driver dropping her off at school every day. She brings home made lunches and generally stays out of the way of all the wealthy kids who completely outnumber her. (more…)
